| Dir. Andrew Neel
As Alice Neel’s grandson, Andrew Neel was in a unique position to direct the first feature length documentary about one of America’s great portrait painters. A self-described collector of souls, Alice Neel recorded her sitters on canvas through six decades of the 20th century, among them Andy Warhol, Bella Abzug, Allen Ginsberg and Annie Sprinkle. She sacrificed almost everything for her art, delving so far into the psyches of her sitters she would almost lose herself. Yet Neel was also a dedicated mother, raising two sons in the bohemian world she inhabited. Despite the extremities of Alice’s professional and personal lives, her ideals remained remarkably consistent and her style and approach to her work un-flagged by the whims of the contemporary art world. Tenacity and a genuine interest in the world allowed her to make powerful paintings. Alice Neel is an investigation of the sacrifices Neel made in order to live and paint the way she wanted. |

| Dir. Luke Meyer, Andrew Neel Winner of the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival, DARKON brings us into the lives of an unusual group of weekend “warrior knights,” fantasy role-playing gamers. Thei live-action battleground is modern-day suburban Baltimore re-imagined as a medieval world called Darkon. Structured as a three-act narrative, the film follows one warrior’s insurgency against a mighty empire within this make-believe realm, constantly challenging notions of what is real and what is constructed. “In character”, the people we meet are charismatic leaders, powerful magicians and dark elves who participate in an emotionally rich social hierarchy. But we also see how their real lives “out of character” necessitate their fantasy world. "You can't go wrong with DARKON. It's an epic fantasy adventure with loads of laughs, starring a bunch of people who, believe it or not, you wish you were." |
