| STANDARD TIME Seventy workers are building a wooden 4 x 12 m "digital" time display in real time: they rebuild it 1611 times within a 24-hour period. Seamlessly documented and shot on HD video, a 24 hours movie or clock is now available. The spectator looking at STANDARD TIME does not only see the time, but also people constructing it. People who, with a stoic sense of duty, are wasting time on an apparently useless activity that fulfills only one function: to display time. Even though the workers are trying hard to construct every single minute, they are constantly on the verge of failing. While every cheap digital clock or watch can display time in a much more precise way, the workers are doing their best to meet the requirements of timeliness and accuracy. Time marches inexorably on, and we can never be sure if these “timeworkers” will complete the next display in time. STANDARD TIME emphasizes the meticulous, old-fashioned and above all, human approach of experiencing time. But this film is more than merely a document of a performance: it is a clock that shows the viewer how much time is left until the next screening. Photos© Bernd Schuller |
